A Prayer in a Single Gesture

Before a Catholic says a single word of any other prayer, most begin here: tracing a cross over the body while naming the Trinity. Tertullian, writing around the year 200 AD, already described Christians signing their foreheads "at every turn" — before eating, bathing, or beginning any task (EWTN). The gesture is older than most of the prayers it introduces.

The words name the central mystery of the Christian faith — one God in three Persons — while the hand traces the instrument of salvation across the body. It is simultaneously a profession of faith, a blessing, and a small act of reclaiming the ordinary (a meal, a car ride, a difficult conversation) for God.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

How It's Made

Touch the forehead at "Father," the chest (or lower chest/heart) at "Son," the left shoulder then right shoulder across "and of the Holy Spirit," and join the hands at "Amen."

2. Praying it slowly, rather than as a rushed habit, is itself a small daily discipline in attentiveness.
