St. Maria Goretti: The Eleven-Year-Old Who Forgave Her Killer

Poverty and an Ordinary Childhood

Maria Goretti was born in 1890 in Corinaldo, Italy, the third of seven children in a desperately poor sharecropping family. After her father died of malaria when she was nine, the family shared a house with another sharecropping family, the Serenellis, in the countryside near Nettuno. Maria took over most household duties — cooking, sewing, caring for younger siblings — while her mother and older siblings worked the fields.

The Attack

On July 5, 1902, when Maria was eleven, Alessandro Serenelli, the twenty-year-old son of the family sharing their home, attempted to sexually assault her. She physically resisted, telling him it was a sin and that he would go to hell. When she continued to refuse and threatened to expose him, he stabbed her repeatedly — fourteen times — and left her for dead. She was found and rushed to a hospital, where she underwent surgery without anesthesia (none was available) and lived for roughly twenty hours afterward.

According to witnesses present, including a priest who attended her, Maria explicitly forgave Alessandro before she died, saying she wanted him with her in heaven. She died the following day.

A Killer's Conversion

Alessandro Serenelli was sentenced to thirty years in prison, initially unrepentant. Roughly eight years into his sentence, he reported a vision of Maria in which she offered him lilies — a traditional symbol of purity — one for each of the years since her death, that turned to flame in his hands as he accepted them. He described it as the turning point of his conversion. Released after twenty-seven years for good behavior, he sought out Maria's mother, Assunta, to beg her forgiveness in person; she forgave him, and the two reportedly received Communion side by side the following Christmas. Serenelli spent the rest of his life as a lay brother in a Capuchin monastery, professing deep devotion to Maria until his own death in 1970.

Because her mother and the man she forgave were both still living, Maria's 1950 canonization by Pope Pius XII was attended by eyewitnesses to her life and death — an unusually direct link between a canonized saint and the living world. She remains one of the Church's most invoked patrons of chastity, sexual assault survivors, and forgiveness.
