St. Raphael the Archangel: The Angel Who Walked the Road With Tobiah

One of Seven Who Stand Before God

Raphael is one of only three angels named directly in the Bible, alongside Michael and Gabriel. His name in Hebrew means "God heals," and Catholic tradition counts him among the seven archangels who "stand ready and enter before the glory of the Lord." Unlike Michael and Gabriel, who appear across several books, Raphael's entire recorded story is told in one place: the Book of Tobit, part of the Catholic Old Testament canon.

A Disguised Traveling Companion

The Book of Tobit tells of two people praying for death on the same night, in different cities, for different reasons. Tobit, an elderly and devout Israelite living in exile in Nineveh, has gone blind after bird droppings fell in his eyes, and prays to die rather than live a burden to others. Meanwhile in Media, a young woman named Sarah has lost seven bridegrooms, each killed on their wedding night by the demon Asmodeus, and is mocked for it by her own household. God sends Raphael to answer both prayers at once. The angel arrives disguised as "Azariah," a kinsman available to guide Tobit's son Tobiah on a journey to collect a debt — and, though Tobiah does not yet know it, to marry Sarah and end her curse.

Healing at Every Turn

On the road, Raphael instructs Tobiah to catch a large fish and keep its heart, liver, and gall rather than discard them. When Tobiah reaches Sarah's house and Raphael arranges the marriage, he tells him to burn the fish's heart and liver on the wedding night; the resulting odor drives Asmodeus away for good, and Tobiah survives what killed seven men before him. Returning home, Tobiah rubs the fish's gall into his father's clouded eyes as Raphael instructed, and Tobit's sight is restored. Only after both healings are complete does the disguised traveling companion reveal who he really is: "I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand ready and enter before the glory of the Lord" (Tobit 12:15). He explains that he had presented Tobit's and Sarah's prayers before God, then ascends and disappears.

Patron of Healing and Travelers

Because of this single story, Raphael became, across many centuries of Christian devotion, the angel most invoked for safe travel, for the restoration of sight and health, and for the discovery of a faithful spouse. His patronage extends naturally to physicians, nurses, and anyone providing medical care, since his very name declares that God heals. Since a 1969 reform of the Roman calendar, his feast is celebrated together with Michael and Gabriel on September 29, honoring all three named archangels on a single day.

1. Raphael traveled disguised as an ordinary companion for most of the story, and Tobiah had no idea he was walking beside an angel. Where might God's help be arriving in your life disguised as something ordinary — a friend, a coincidence, a stranger's kindness?
2. Both Tobit and Sarah prayed for death out of suffering they could see no way out of, and both were answered instead with healing they could not have arranged themselves. What situation in your own life feels like it has no way out?
3. Raphael told Tobiah exactly what to do — catch the fish, keep specific parts of it — well before either of them understood why it mattered. Is there guidance you have received that you have not yet trusted or acted on?
4. Only after the healing was complete did Raphael reveal who he truly was. Have you recognized God's hand in something only in hindsight, after it was already finished?
5. Raphael is invoked for travelers, for the sick, and for those seeking a faithful spouse — three very different kinds of vulnerability. Which of those three feels most present in your life right now, and have you brought it to prayer?
